Even with its ludicrous moments, such as Elliot Gould and Marlo Thomas on LSD, this movie had me laugh out loud multiple times. As Claire, Alicia Witt excels at expressing a variety of emotions and even improvising on the piano to enhance her performance. She exhibits her flair for pulling odd faces as she deftly strikes a balance between serious, goofy, and humorous moments. She doesn't seem or sound Jewish, in contrast to her family, which is one small drawback. As her mentor, Fierstein is ok, but the other family members, including Gould and Thomas, seem flat. Even with its overuse of clichés, the movie is hilarious if you just let yourself take in the mayhem. Read all

A talented young pianist must simultaneously face career auditions, emotional problems being left by her boyfriend, and a family that does little to take an active interest in her when she is forced to return home. We know that making a career as a musician is not easy. Courage is needed, here as for everyone in life when it is time to move forward. Saying that the film is a "comic gem" (as can be seen in some presentations) seems excessive: sure, you can see it, sometimes you smile and the short musical pieces are excellent, but the story is decidedly thin.
