Cryptic but fascinating

Garland, needless to say again, is one of the very few active directors (along with Refn and Lanthimos) in whom Kubrick's verb has been grafted and has begun to produce shoots.

Despite this, the works by Garland have always been imperfect although of a high level of quality (from "Ex-Machina" to "Annihilation") until reaching their peak with the one-off series "Devs", a work where imperfections are reduced to a minimum.

"Men" is not a perfect film, it does not have a complex plot but certain sequences must be seen and reviewed several times to try to decipher them in the most logical way possible.

In the end " Men" proves to be absolutely fascinating (much more than the two previous films) although in a less direct and instinctive way.

The plot, in itself, is far too simple but the spectator will immediately realize that the things that are shown by the director do not necessarily turn out to be exactly as they are in reality.

A woman, Harper Marlowe, chases her husband James away from home after yet another violent argument; shortly afterwards the woman sees from the window (we are inside an apartment in a building) her husband's body falling into the void: suicide or accident?

Some time later the woman rents a house , in a small village about three hours' drive from London, to be able to relax and try to find psychological stability after the dramatic event.

She is welcomed by Geoffrey, the owner, who introduces her to the motionless and who takes leave of her, informing her that for any problem she can refer to him.

The following day Harper takes a walk in the countryside surrounding the house and the contact with Nature seems to be reassuring her until the moment in which he arrives at the entrance of a tunnel (the one shown in the poster): although he is wary of crossing it, he still decides not to stop and starts making vocalizations in such a way as to listen to the echo present in the tunnel.
< br />The further she enters the tunnel, the more the woman seems to find greater self-confidence until the moment when, at the other entrance to the tunnel, she sees a male figure who stands up and begins to stare at her.
< br />Harper, obviously, is surprised by this sudden appearance and instinctively begins to run away, trying to follow the same path she came in, knowing that the man is chasing her...

From here an authentic ordeal begins characterized by the encounter with various characters who, in the director's intentions, should reveal more details about the woman's state of mind.

With evident horror dynamics, the story will continue until reaching a sort of Grand Guignol where the spectator will have to be particularly attentive to understand the meaning of the entire story.

Simple plot but which evolves in a complex way, it is certainly not Garland's easiest film but it is the one that I think has the greatest charm.
To see, reflect, think and understand.
