Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

(Film, 2024)

The perfect prequel to "Fury Road"

The Australian director George Miller is the creator of the Mad Max saga (in the first three films starring Mel Gibson) which is made up, to date, of five films:

  • Interceptor (1979) ;
  • Interceptor: The Road Warrior (1981);
  • Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985);
  • Mad Max: Fury Road (2015);
  • Furiosa: a Mad Max saga (2024).

The future of the saga now seemed to have definitively disappeared but Miller, after thirty years, creates a true masterpiece with “Fury Road” (it won 6 Oscars) and from that moment the story and the characters return to vogue.

It took almost ten years for Miller to write and direct the prequel to “Fury Road”, exclusively dedicated to the story of Furiosa who had already been a fundamental character in the previous film.

This film describes the story of the Empress, from when she was a child until her final transformation into the character we had known in “Fury Road”.

We then move from Charlize Theron (her performance is absolutely unforgettable) to Alyla Browne who plays Furiosa as a child up to Anya Taylor-Joy who plays her as a girl and both the two actresses prove to be decidedly up to the task assigned.

From an aesthetic and rhythmic point of view, “Furiosa” takes up, almost literally, the style of “ Fury Road”: great pace, well-finished action scenes, excellent sound scene.

The film is a prequel that fits perfectly with the previous film: divided into five parts, it describes the story and the vicissitudes of Furiosa and will end with the Empress who, secretly, steals an armored tanker allowing Immortan Joe's five wives to escape (practically the beginning of “Fury Road”).

In the cast we also have the presence of the famous Chris "Thor" Hemsworth who plays Dementus, a crazy and ruthless tyrant who will end up killing the mother of little Furiosa kidnapped by his henchmen: from that moment, for fifteen years, Furiosa will have a single objective, to kill Dementus.

It is difficult to find discordant elements between the two films: if one sees "Furiosa" first and "Fury Road" afterwards, the spectator will have the clear perception of being watching a single film of almost 4 and a half hours, a spectacle to feast your eyes on for Action lovers.

All the actors prove themselves up to the task (yes , even the Marvelian Hemsworth) and therefore it would seem all roses and flowers but unfortunately this is not the case…

If “Fury Road” had grossed 380 million dollars becoming a worldwide success (costing around 160 million), “Furiosa” grossed only $172 million against a cost of $168, making it a resounding flop, both for Village Roadshow Pictures, the producer, and also for Warner Bros, the distributor.
