Sei fratelli

(Film, 2024)

Five brothers discover at the meeting with the notary for the inheritance that there are actually six of them. However, this is not the main problem, the five are already children of three different mothers (and they are not all his biologically), they live dispersed between Italy and France and have not seen each other for years. The last sister who appears now takes a little longer to become part of the group, which in any case has very little to share: only debts, and a company for the cultivation of oysters that has been brought back to cultivating pearls (but there are only one). In the period in which the six all have to live together in Bordeaux, where their father last lived, they have to decide what to do, they have different perspectives, various issues between them (in some cases a couple of wives who remain there also have something to do with it).

In filming events of this type, already present in Italian cinema, what is new here seems above all to be the setting: some exteriors were filmed in Bordeaux, and it is noticeable, and there is no question relating to the different Italian or French origins of the characters. The issues are very different, as has been said, the problem is that they are not really explored in depth, the arguments also leave room for moments of collective relaxation, and it is very difficult for anything to mature. As in real life, perhaps there is no space either for an irreducible argument or for a strong reconciliation. Too often we are left without more precise answers than what past dynamics suggest. This seems to be the weak element of the film, in the face of excellent acting and a story that could have been even more interesting.
