Zama - Lucrecia Martel of  Rocco Rocco
SoundtrackDirectionCostumesScenography
"There is a fish that spends its life swimming fighting the waters that try to throw it onto dry land. Because the water rejects it. The water doesn't want it. This suffering fish, so attached to the element that repels it, devotes all his energy to the achievement of permanence. You will never find him in the central part of the river, but always near the banks." The prophetic parable that Lucrecia Martel puts into the mouth of a suicidal Indian during an interrogation is well suited and at the same time prepares and warns us about the fate of Don Diego de Zama, an official and administrator of the Spanish Crown catapulted into a remote province of Argentina in the 18th century. The drama is based on the best seller by Antonio Di Benedetto, a classic of Latin American literature (which unfortunately I have not yet read) and the tone of the narrative is slow, marked and gives the story of the corregidor the nobility of an ancient curse that unravels like a sinister prophecy. The man is waiting to receive a promotion and a transfer that will take him to Lerma, next to his longed-for family. That transfer will not arrive, what lies in between is a mixture of anxieties, expectations, frustrated desires, misplaced expectations and colonial and macho arrogance. A raw and realistic stretch of South America that is difficult for a Western viewer to swallow, and which clashes with the chilling beauty of majestic, but always placid and orderly open fields. The Spanish crown reigns, but does not rule amidst pompous rites and worn wigs. We soon understand that it is Don Diego that fish rejected by the waters of his native land, inhospitable to an official not Spanish enough to gain the officer's prestige and not indigenous enough to gain respect from the local population. He does not cease to energetically move business, relationships, but just as he can Read all

plot

In a remote South American colony in the late 18th century, officer Zama of the Spanish crown waits in vain for a transfer to a more prestigious location. He suffers small humiliations and petty politicking as he increasingly succumbs to lust and paranoia.
