If the word "sadism" has French origins (from the Marquis De Sade), the term "masochism" has Austrian origins (from Baron Leopold Von Sacher-Masoch) and this work by Master Polanski deals with masochism. “Venus in Fur” is Masoch's best-known novel and this film is the film adaptation of one of the major works dedicated to this particular aspect of the love relationship between two lovers. Polanski is one of the absolute Masters of the seventh art and his career is dotted with many films that have made up his history. To frame the historical moment of this film (made in 2013), Polanski comes from the success of "Carnage" two years ago first, excellent closed-camera film starring a poker of formidable actors, from Jodie Foster to Kate Winslet, from Christoph Waltz to John C. Reilly). For the adaptation of Masoch's novel, the director makes a choice that will prove admirable: he opts for a completely closed environment, isolated from the rest of the world, a theatre, its stage and the two antagonists. Point. The film constitutes a real manual to study for those who want to learn the art of acting: a talented Mathieu Amalric is contrasted by an absolutely overflowing and irrepressible Emmanuelle Seigner (the Master's wife), author of a masterful performance of absolute level (in addition the Oscar) in which she plays Vanda, a starlet who, at the last moment, tries to audition with the director (Amalric). The sensual charge expressed by Seigner is truly heart-stopping, eroticism and masochism come together and give rise to a unique theatrical piece.
