David Robert Mitchell, American director and screenwriter, achieved great success with audiences and critics all over the world in 2014 with his debut feature film “It Follow”. Personally, I have always found the hype and enthusiasm for that film exaggerated. , considering it a decent proof and nothing more (in that year films like “Babadook” or “Honeymoon” or “As the Gods Will”, I go from memory, are unquestionably superior). In 2018 Mitchell returns with "Under the Silver Lake" and here things are completely reversed: also due to poor distribution in theaters, the film grosses very little and goes practically unnoticed even by critics... and instead, personally, I think this second absolutely superior, in all respects, compared to the previous film. We are certainly talking about a film that is not suitable for everyone, both for its duration (two hours and a quarter), for its themes and for its narrative structure. Mitchell makes a decisive transition between “It Follows” and “Under The Lake” anticipating, in some ways, what Aster would do years later between “Midsommar” and “Beau is afraid”: moving from Horror to broader works that mix multiple genres together. The cast is certainly first-rate: from Andrew “Spider Man” Garfield (who plays Sam, the absolute protagonist of the film) to Riley Keough (who plays the mysterious Sarah), from Callie Hernandez to Topher Grace up to Jimmi Simpson, everyone contributes to maintain a high level of interpretation. Mitchell's direction is a long and constant tribute to the clichés of Hitchcockian cinema, from the narration to the soundtrack to the shots, everything seems to pay homage to the great Master of Thriller and the director does nothing to hide it...The plot is decidedly fascinating and cryptic at the same time time.
