Review of  Diego Cineriflessi Diego Cineriflessi
Thinking back today to the moment in which we saw this film by Peter Weir on the screen for the first time is almost tender. Reality TV didn't exist yet, Big Brother was just a literary invention by Orwell and what we were seeing seemed light years away. Today the context surprises us much less and everything is almost acceptable, but the fundamental themes of the film remain very current. The Truman show talks first of all about freedom, the desire to be able to move freely around the world, learn, discover... In times of quarantine and obligations to stay at home, it is decidedly easy to identify with Truman. Because freedom of movement is also associated with free will. Who among us would like to lose the freedom to choose what to do and how to do it? The film starts from philosophy to also touch on theology, it is no coincidence that the deus ex machina is called Christof and the ending asks questions that we should ask ourselves too. Can a safe organized life be more comfortable than a risky free life? Does man know how to take his own risks? The direction by the veteran Weir is intelligent, playing with fake stolen shots, with zooms on fake sponsors. Many slanted shots exacerbate the sense of oppression that the excellent screenplay by Andrew Niccol (who would later make himself noticed with other dystopian adventures such as GATTACA or In time) suggests. The cast is led by Jim Carrey who at the time accepted his first dramatic role. The bet was won and even detractors like myself can only praise him. Ed Harris was also very good, in those years a leading supporting player in many great films. If someone hasn't seen it, get it... he won't be disappointed Read all

plot

Truman Burbank is the star of The Truman Show, a 24-hour-a-day reality TV show that broadcasts every aspect of his life without his knowledge. His entire life has been an unending soap opera for consumption by the rest of the world. And everyone he knows, including his wife and his best friend, is really an actor, paid to be part of his life.
