Review of  Paolo Bonini Paolo Bonini
"The definitive trial of humanity" "There is no escaping the machine" Gilles Deleuze, Felix Guattari, "Kafka. For a minor literature" To those who have assiduously frequented Kafka like myself, a film about him may seem superfluous and useless, but then once seen, "The Trial" by Orson Welles (1962), you will have to think again. This is the best cinematographic work of the American director, who manages to give us the same narrative tension as "The Third Man" (1949) by Carol reed but attributed to it. The feeling of being hunted is omnipresent in this film and perpetuates until the final catharsis, which presents one of the images dear to Welles, and with which his "Don Quixote" (1992) should have ended, that of an explosion followed by the appearance of a nuclear mushroom. The scenes of the film are pervaded by baroque and suffocating atmospheres, in fact there appears that sensation of horror vacui which also and above all manifests itself in the appearance and architectural form of the buildings, whose interiors of the sets seem to collapse not only on the shoulders of Anthony Perkins, but also collapsing on the spectator. This aspect makes this work a true modern neo-baroque jewel. A separate note should be dedicated first of all to the acting of some of the actors in the film who manage to maintain the narrative tension (mentioned above) of the story firmly thanks to their interpretation, a factor that allows us to better appreciate the final resolution of the story. Let's start first with Perkins, whose acting tendency to maintain an aggressive and rebellious attitude from the beginning to the end of the film allows us to focus the work well on one of the fundamental aspects of poetics Kafkaesque, the vanity of the action. This concrete sensation is then supported by the desperation of anchoring the protagonist on the part of the female figures whose two main ones are played by Jeanne Moreau and Romy Schneider in the part of Leni, suffocating secretary of Josef's lawyer K. plot

Josef K wakes up in the morning and finds the police in his room. They tell him that he is on trial but nobody tells him what he is accused of. In order to find out about the reason for this accusation and to protest his innocence, he tries to look behind the façade of the judicial system. But since this remains fruitless, there seems to be no chance for him to escape from this nightmare.
