The Traitor, however, is not a film strictly about the mafia. The director from Piacenza uses the figure of Buscetta as a picklock to open a door in the conscience of a man born very poor, poorly educated, but endowed with great intelligence and charisma and aware of now being relegated to the margins, a man who sees all certainties collapse, a "man of honor" who sees the ancient "values" ignored. A protagonist with whom we can empathize then? It depends on who is watching and on the mentality we were talking about at the beginning because Bellocchio does not judge, but observes like a scientist in his laboratory. So a cold and detached examination of a historical phenomenon? This isn't completely true either because Favino with his magnetic interpretation and mimetic versatility does not become, but is, Buscetta. An important film, spare and essential despite its two and a half hour duration, devoid of that superficiality typical of so much Italian cinema in recent decades. A film worth seeing. Read all

plot
