Review of  Diego Cineriflessi Diego Cineriflessi
When faced with a work like The Square one feels small. Ostlund plays with his spectators, provokes them, stuns them and accuses them in two hours of vitriolic film. It starts with a criticism/reflection on modern art since the protagonist is the director of a contemporary art museum. Little by little, however, the critical eye shifts from art to man. A man that Ostlund always portrays in a narrow-minded way. As in Force Majeure, the protagonist is blinded by his innate and intrinsic selfishness which leads him to make wrong choices, to commit serious mistakes in order to correct others in an involuntarily self-destructive vortex. Even the best intentions are often dictated by the desire to appear well in society they turn into disasters and the sense of superiority is not mitigated even in front of a child. The result is good, full of reflective ideas with careful and at times documentary-like direction associated with the very important and rhythmic use of music. What begins as a comedy gradually turns into a drama. Nowadays finding a film and a director with such storytelling ability is difficult even if at times it is a little too cerebral and cold. The Square nevertheless won the Palme d'Or at the last Cannes Film Festival amid controversy and. It received an Oscar nomination for best foreign film. Definitely not a film for all tastes, but worth seeing. Read all
