The doorbell rings. Peter (Hugh Jackman) opens the door and finds himself in the doorway: behind him his new partner (Vanessa Kirby) holding their child, in front of him his ex-wife asking for help with their teenage son. Because the past always comes back, we know. (I really appreciated this scene, in which the man hesitates between the past and the present, he is divided in half). The close-ups that the director, Florian Zoller, reserves for the man immediately reveal two determined eyes, capable of looking to the future. Peter, in fact, is a mature man, brilliant at work, capable of self-control. He would like to be a reassuring point of reference for his son, who seems to be experiencing a very normal adolescent crisis. He sincerely thinks he can make it, but he will have to deal with a sadness that appears more and more exaggerated day after day. Disarming for the mother, for Peter's partner and (perhaps) for him too. Something inside Nicholas (Zen McGrath), with the separation of his parents, must have obviously broken irreparably. He too is split in half. He shuns the company of his peers, doesn't attend school and isolates himself in a park. He terribly experiences the anxiety of those who are unable to respond with determination to the complexity of the reality that surrounds them. (Every identity evolves in a unique way and a negative factor can disturb it to the point of preventing a peaceful and complete maturation. It can happen, but it does not necessarily always happen like this. Each of us is, in fact, unique and unrepeatable). I believe that it is not always easy to stage emotions, especially when they are linked to complex mental conditions such as, for example, depression. The director, in my opinion, succeeded brilliantly, also through the prevalence of cold colors in the scenes.
