You'll like it even if you don't like the western genre of

This is a masterpiece about the “END” from every point of view. The west is no longer something wild to conquer. The setting is no longer that of stagecoaches, red Indians, railways under construction. That era is rapidly coming to an end. Just as the classic western genre is also coming to an end, a now exhausted narrative thread which sees in this film the last song of a dying swan. (And then resurrect years later in different ways). John Wayne is in his last performance and perhaps also his best, now suffering from cancer and in severe pain that limits his movements. Just as this film represents the end of the old gunslinger at the end of his years, in the same way the actor knows well that he is staging the representation of his own death which will take place in a few years. The dialogue between Wayne and James Stewart on the gunslinger's health conditions, in light of the reality of the facts, becomes even more full of meaning. You don't have to love the western genre to love this film; you just need to love cinema. And then John Wayne says goodbye in his own way: by refusing to follow the script that required his character to kill a man by shooting him in the back. plot

Afflicted with a terminal illness John Bernard Brooks, the last of the legendary gunfighters, quietly returns to Carson City for medical attention from his old friend Dr. Hostetler. Aware that his days are numbered, the troubled man seeks solace and peace in a boarding house run by a widow and her son. However, it is not Brooks' fate to die in peace, as he becomes embroiled in one last valiant battle.
