Del Toro stages this noir-tinged melodrama excellently, keeping his poetics intact and carrying forward his themes. Color immediately dominates the film, all the shades of water, from blue, oil, green very present but even the characters indicate their emotions based on what they wear. The photography is in fact beautiful and is always in line with the narrative, exemplary when the aqua shades blend with the browns of the earth or the red of the passion that will invade the protagonist. As written all the deltorian themes return, as in Hellboy we find the love between "different beings" this time between the woman and the aquatic creature, the humble work (cleaning lady) always shown with respect, how the diversity of both the protagonist who is mute, of the creature, of the friend (racial theme) but also of the graphic designer who, being gay, is frowned upon by society. The creature is not the real monster, this is represented by the character of Shannon who is truly repugnant, he is a racist, a man who does not tolerate failure, a selfish man who has no respect for others or for women. Once again they return the symbols such as the egg (the nascist) and also the religious elements. Also interesting is how Del Toro shows both the Soviet and state management which in practice are two sides of the same coin (both want the creature dead). There are many memorable sequences and shots, all always well constructed with impeccable camera movements. Great film by the director who makes it almost a summation of his poetics. Read all

An other-worldly story, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1962, where a mute janitor working at a lab falls in love with an amphibious man being held captive there and devises a plan to help him escape.
