Where does cinema come from? Basically from a trick, just images close to each other that create the illusion of movement. The first filmmakers were a kind of illusionists (or they were professional illusionists, like Georges Méliès) who entertained a limited audience (not global like today) with live performances (the music was performed live in the theater). This passion for Illusion is fundamental in Nolan's cinema and The Prestige is probably his most heartfelt homage to the "magical" world. Everything is staged to deceive, confuse, impress.
