Confession: I fell in love with cinema after seeing Piano Lessons for the first time. It is therefore obvious that when a new and rare work by Jane Campion arrives on the big screen, my expectations are very high, especially if accompanied by a director's award in Venice and good reviews from critics. So? The Power of the Dog is a very good film, in which Jane Campion quotes herself, titillates the spectators and shows off her incredible directorial skills. No sound, no shadow, no silence is shot at random. Everything that at first glance may only seem aesthetically beautiful in Campion's cinema always has a strong meaning. (George's shadow during the revelation of his marriage plans to Phil is an example of this). Here there is no shortage of extraordinary key scenes such as the wedding night which becomes a powerful mix of tension and suffering, or the discovery of Phil's secret place. Extremely high cinema, always poised between rudeness and sensuality, an eros and thanatos in the West. Campion keeps the spectator in tension, constructs moments in which it seems that everything is about to break down and instead the emotions are suffocated, repressed, like the protagonist . They are fires that are put out almost unexpectedly. Leaving us in suspense and ready for a new chapter. The power of the dog in fact maintains the chapter structure typical of novels because in this way each time the director can start again and present the point of view of a different character without distorting the style of the film and carrying the story forward thanks to the eyes of those who are most involved in the events at that moment. The cast in a state of grace is led by a surprising Benedict Chumberbatch. Also thanks to Campion's direction, she manages to give a trivial soul that is out of the ordinary Read all

"when the dress doesn't make the monk... oops it doesn't make the film". Campion has the ability to build plots that are never predictable, where the roles sometimes reverse and the physical victim does not always coincide with the psychological victim. Here too, in an unusual western setting (in fact the border territory is functional to the staging, but the developments are not canonical for the genre), we have a "dominator" and some presumed "martyrs", but what we see is a an artificial canvas, capable of concealing the reality of the facts. Only the dry and rightly little-told ending opens our eyes to the meaning of what we have seen and the surprise is great. Classic film capable of confronting me with the vision, the need to find answers, to elaborate my own thoughts is meritorious for me and even if I "suffered" a bit during it, in the end my opinion is positive. The acting performances are good, the photography, costumes and soundtrack are beautiful. Read all
