In 2016 Nicolas Winding Refn created what, to this day, is his masterpiece. The "neon demon" is a film that approaches absolute stylistic and visual perfection and is imbued with Kubrickian perspectives to the core. It is a work that puts the viewer at a crossroads, without half measures: either you hate it or you hate it. we love each other madly. Refn, who here apparently uses narration to raise awareness of the unscrupulous and often immoral dynamics of the world of fashion (a topic already covered in other films), in reality succeeds, in an almost subtle but extremely refined and elegant way, using a whole series of allegorical and extremely symbolic elements, to transport the film from a product whose fulcrum is the visual, photographic, sometimes surreal, sometimes hyper-realistic perception of a story to a subject in which tension and horror reign supreme. So many sides of the human soul are explored that the film seems to be a sort of descent into the underworld reminiscent of Dante: the cult of the body, the sense of Beauty, anthropophagy, Innocence, Pride, Wickedness, Greed, Lust, Jealousy, Narcissism, Careerism, Envy and many other aspects of human existence. No, there is no room for Love unfortunately, perhaps because Jesse (an incredible Elle Fanning) representing Purity (corporal and spiritual), flies above this immense, but always human, feeling. The opening sequence is Kubrick without any ifs or buts and is already, in itself, very explanatory: there is a perfect symmetry (typical of the Great Master) and a play of light and shadow that takes your breath away; Jesse is lying, bleeding, practically a corpse and yet she expresses a non-human beauty and elegance.
