Ruggero Deodato, Sergio Martino, Lucio Fulci. It took Eli Roth for the forbidden names of some of the most important Italian genre directors to be uttered within a Festival. Our sad fate is that since the 1960s our genre cinema has slowly but surely crossed the borders of Italy and, like a virus, has infected the minds of many of those directors who today too many praise. Mistreated at home, the names mentioned above, to which we cannot fail to add at least those of Mario Bava, Sergio Leone and Umberto Lenzi, have been the object of veneration especially overseas. From the generation of American directors who cut their teeth in the court of Roger Corman, another king of b-movies (people like Francis Ford Coppola, Joe Dante, Jonathan Demme), through Scorsese (Bava's lover) up to the group that revolves around Quentin Tarantino, which includes both Eli Roth and Robert Rodríguez, everyone learned how it was possible to make good genre cinema, sometimes reaching excellent artistic heights, through the so-called Italian B-series films. And we Italians, as good subjects, today happily allow ourselves to be colonized by these American directors who do nothing but propose to us what we knew how to do better and with less money. The fault, obviously, is not Tarantino, Rodríguez or Roth. They fulfilled the dream of any teenager, making money by making their personal homages to the cinema they loved. The green inferno does not escape this rule, it is a brazen homage, sometimes bordering on plagiarism, to Deodato's Cannibal holocaust. We are sure that when it arrives in cinemas the usual pompous critics will not fail to advertise it unconsciously by talking about scandal.
