Review of  Ignazio Venzano Ignazio Venzano
If late eighteenth century music disturbs you a lot, don't watch it. Otherwise, I have to say that the two-plus hours of this film go by quickly and interestingly. For several reasons. There is a careful reconstruction of the life of certain nobility of the time, especially Venice and Naples, but not only. In this, biography prevails: the personal history and adventures of Josef Myslivecek, known as the Bohemian. The music is also beautiful, even though it belongs to a different season: having to spend the days and especially the evenings, the nobles had to rely above all on bel canto, paid more than music composers. With stories drawn from ancient mythology. In all this, libertinism and hypocrisy. Young and old women who were still looking for passion, being forced to marry older but rich, sometimes even jealous and violent men. Masks that allowed you to hide even in public. THE Bohemian between desire and passion on the one hand, the need to find consensus in music on the other. Two incompatible things that lead him to a life of continuous and expensive movement between various Italian courts, Germany and Prague. The young Mozart and the desire for musical innovation at the end of the waning eighteenth century also had something to do with it. Soon, the French Revolution will sweep Europe. Good film, therefore, well constructed and well made. Read all

plot

The year is 1764. For over a year, Josef has been leading a precarious life in Venice. He hopes to become an opera composer. The city, full of talented and already-established composers, seems closed to him. Looking for work as a violinist, he comes into the orbit of a rich young woman. Thanks to her, he gets the opportunity to play at salons. But his real opportunity arises when he becomes the lover of a libertine marquise. She teaches him worldly manners, rids him of signs of a provincial upbringing and introduces him to a hedonistic existence free from religious intolerance. Thus transformed, Josef gets an incan incredible commission: to write an opera for the San Carlo, Europe's largest theatre.
