Maryam Touzani possesses a rare quality in today's cinema: fluidity in the story. The Blue Caftan is his second work and confirms the qualities that had already been appreciated in Adam, his debut with an international impact. This time, also aided by the rustling of the fabric, the absolute co-protagonist, Touzani makes a whispered film. With the camera she caresses her protagonists, like fabrics, she makes us feel them, touch them. She frames their gazes, describes their resistance and manages to delicately reveal their feelings. Helped by splendid photography in warm colours, the director manages to talk about burning issues without ever creating pity or seeking scandal and for a film set in Morocco she is truly a great feat. She is supported by excellent actors like Azabal who proves herself to be an actress who interprets strong women, capable of fighting for ideas and without fear of judgement. She puts her heart and soul into it here and the result is remarkable. Saleh Bakri is also good at portraying a conflicted character who struggles towards awareness. A beautiful confirmation and a work that deserves attention. Singer of traditions, but never of traditionalisms, she describes a culture still little known in the world with its pros and cons. plot

Halim has been married to Mina for a long time, with whom he runs a traditional caftan store in the medina (old town) of Salé, Morocco. The couple has always lived with Halim's secret – his homosexuality – about which he has learned to keep quiet. However, Mina's illness and the arrival of a young apprentice upsets this balance. United in their love, each will help the other face his fears.
