Hitchcock is the master of suspense, the mechanism by which the spectator has more information than the characters on stage, thus causing tension for the outcome of these characters, while Douglas Sirk, in addition to being the master of the melody, is also the master of the anti- suspense, that is, playing with the spectator by providing information but often not complete and which will then be subverted. Director J.T. On a conceptual level, Mollner refers to Douglas Sirk's anti-suspense as he directs a thriller divided into six chapters but shown in staggered, non-chronological order, in order to play with the concept of suspense, with the expectations and information that arise they want to give to the viewer, subverting them from time to time. The film also plays with the dynamics of the thriller, also referring to stylistic elements from different decades, the beginning seems like a typical 70s thriller and then the escape and car chase sequence, while then it turns towards more 90s dynamics, gives us they are dialogues that, in the way they are handled, are a bit reminiscent of Tarantino and the Cohens, that desire to also create tension through humour. The breakfast sequence of the elderly ex-bikers couple is emblematic in this regard. Also interesting is a more "esoteric" thriller-horror twist which also recalls February by Oz Perkins, especially in the ending. J.T. Mollner directs the film well, the entire part in the neon-lit room between the two protagonists, The Electric Lady and Demon, is good, the beautiful long shot of Demon's entry into the elderly couple's house is good as well as there is no shortage of bloodier scenes with throats cut and pieces of meat bitten off. Jeffrey Tyler Mollner is an American director who, after having cut his teeth with various short films, made his debut in 2016 with the western “Angels and Outlaws” with which he participated in the Sundance Festival. After 7 years, in 2023 he returns to theaters with this “Strange Treasure ” which is screened in September in Texas for just one day, after which, in fact, the film is regularly distributed in 2024 therefore it can be considered as part of the "basket" of films this year. The film also constitutes the debut of the actor Giovanni Ribisi as director of photography. The cast is made up of the two protagonists, "the Lady" played by Willa Fitzgerald and "The Demon" played by Kyle Gallner together with the veteran Barbara Hershey and Ed Begley Jr. Divided into 6 chapters, Mollner (author of the screenplay) decides to revolutionize the narrative linearity starting from Chapter III, continuing with Chapter V, then continuing with Chapter I and so on ending with Chapter VI, a stratagem which, copying Nolan's "Memento", will lead to an unexpected twist. The film is certainly full of tension where the Lady and the Demon will play cat and mouse for the entire duration and there will certainly be no shortage of deaths and bloodshed which will make everything even more violent and dynamic. The management of the pace is satisfactory even if Chapter I is far too verbal but you can easily turn a blind eye. It can easily be considered one of the best thrillers of the year (though not at the level of “Longlegs” and “Oddity” which boast much more complex screenplays) which will certainly not disappoint lovers of thrills and action. I watch a lot of movies, but I can confidently say this was my best movie experience recently! Look, I don't want to share too much😂. But to be honest, the film excels in pacing and cinematography. The two leads delivered outstanding performances! I recommend seeing it as soon as you can. While the first watch is the most impactful, you can watch it several times and it still leaves you feeling satisfied. I'd had to give it a 10, as it truly deserves it, but I usually reserve that rating for films I want to watch repeatedly. 👏👏👏 Read all
