Review of  Screencrash Screencrash
Apt title for this portrait of Princess Diana (claustrophobic, more metaphorical than real) in the days around Christmas, just before making the decision to abandon the royal family to go back to being simply... Spencer. Good performance by Kristen Stewart, balanced between rebellion and nobility, as well as the direction by Pablo Larrain (let's hope he puts biopics on hold at least for a while, though). However, the film focuses on Diana's state of mind for too long, losing the credibility at the screenplay level that history instead delivered to the news. Even Anne Boleyn's imaginary dialogues border on the ridiculous. Read all

Pablo Larrain had already sublimely told a glimpse of Jacqueline Kennedy's life in Jackie. Another sad princess caught in the height of her tragedy. There the film was enriched with reflections on life and large systems in a truly interesting way. Unfortunately in Spencer the private side of tragedy takes over. Larrain fails to universalize Diana's loneliness and pain. Her character remains entangled in that image that the media has always tried to build around her. Even Anne Boleyn's fantasy-horror inserts appear out of place and uninspired. Certainly the Chilean director has not lost his hand and his ability to construct suggestive and stylistically beautiful images remains undeniable. The dialogue between Charles and Diana at the pool table is textbook, the desire to convey to us a sense of constraint is successful... Yet without a real dramatic development Larrain also falls. Kirsten Stewart despite numerous nominations for important awards and the efforts made it is not completely convincing. She lacks the depth and probably the maturity to handle such a role. Even the rest of the cast cannot shine in the emotional prison constructed by Larrain. Having entered competition at the last Venice Film Festival, it is undeniable that the film disappointed critics and the public. Indeed, unfortunately it often goes in vain and little else remains behind the excellent formal elegance. Read all

It may not be many people's top film, but there is no doubt a lot to admire about Spencer. One of the many things to admire is Kristen Stewart on her ability to convey a dark, vulnerable perspective of the late Princess Diana. I have to admit, the film has subtle moments that lack depth, but film successfully shares a different look at the life of the royal while tapping into major fears and honest truths about her life. and by the way don't forget, the costumes were superb, the cinematography enchanting. Great movie!! Read all
