Review of  Balkan Castevet Balkan Castevet
Thriller-noir which has a lot of strength in the tense scenes and less in the "settlement" scenes of the story. The film starts off very well straight away, Litvak's direction is almost pyrotechnic, full of camera movements to introduce us to the rooms, to the various settings, there is no shortage of long shots and in fact the beginning, through camera movement, projects the viewer to the room of Leona, the protagonist, where she is seen to be ill in bed, with the director keeping an eye on the various objects such as medicines and the white telephone. Litvak manages the tense sequences very well and in fact the camera movements almost make one think of connecting telephone wires. The first act is enveloping, Leona is always on the telephone, trying to understand the mystery, what is happened to her boyfriend Henry and the direction is lively with a good pace. In the central part when the film narrates the past of the characters through flashbacks making the viewer understand what is happening and the various points of view, the film loses pace and drops a bit in tone. The finale becomes adrenaline-filled again, Livtak creates a marvelous long shot, the tension is fitting also thanks to the expressiveness of the characters, Henry on the phone starting to sweat, Leona (Barbara Stanwyck) giving fantastic close-ups; but also thanks to the individual shots, the depth of field where the background of the bridge can be seen from the window of Leona's room, the advancing shadow that the viewer notices before Leona, creating suspense. The details such as the white telephone in Leona's room are also excellent. Leona which contrasts with the other black phones present in the film and the excellent final shot with the white glove. In the film there are the somewhat classic noir themes such as greed, Herny has no qualifications, he does not come from a family rich woman wants to get rich but doesn't want to submit to her father Read all
