The son of Saul of  Federico Tyst Querin Federico Tyst Querin
Laszlo Nemes' first feature film is of primary importance. For decades, in fact, European and world culture has questioned the unrepresentability of the Holocaust, struggling to find a solution to the enigma: how to represent the unrepresentable? Numerous attempts have been made, without obtaining results. Think of the colossal Shoah by Claude Lanzmann, the largest - not only in terms of duration - documentary on the topic: it talks about the Holocaust, makes its surviving victims talk, shows the places, but avoids representing it. A first, partial answer to the question was obtained by Alain Resnais with his short film Notte e Nebbia, in which the representation of the Holocaust is sketched at the meeting point between the silence of the concentration camps today and the noise of the photographic finds that they portray the bodies tortured by hunger, fatigue and fear of the prisoners. But even Resnais was unable to create a true representation of the unrepresentable. Nemes yes. The Son of Saul succeeds where no one has ever succeeded. The horror of life in the concentration camps is placed in the background on the screen. Nemes' camera, in fact, remains stuck on the figure of Saul, often framed from behind in long sequence shots that follow him throughout his experience as a sonderkommando. Everything that happens is just beyond his silhouette: relegated to the background, in the out-of-focus region delineated by an extremely narrow depth of field. The drama of Saul is the drama OF Saul, erected here as a crystal of the horror, fear and desperation experienced by the prisoners. The viewer becomes a witness to what happened inside the concentration camps through the protagonist's story. Read all
