Victim of his own arrogance, man sets out to conquer space without even knowing himself, with the illusion of understanding the universe by bending it to the poverty of the scientific method. But as soon as a sentient ocean materializes what rational activity cannot understand, presumption becomes desperation. We are thus returned to the defective condition that belongs to us. plot

A psychologist is sent to a space station orbiting a planet called Solaris to investigate the death of a doctor and the mental problems of cosmonauts on the station. He soon discovers that the water on the planet is a type of brain which brings out repressed memories and obsessions.
