Much ado about nothing. When the hype has no justification. Saltburn was released very recently but it made so much noise that I almost felt obliged to see it. I approach the viewing, overwhelmed by articles and various reviews that praise the film in such a blatant way and full of feeling that my internal alarm is already ringing wildly, I have rarely found myself in agreement with so much enthusiasm... and once again the internal alarm has hit the mark. There are certainly elements worthy of note, but I find this love for a film that I consider the Generation Z version of “The Talented Mr Ripley” + the British and mentally ill version of Parasite is truly exaggerated. The new Tom Ripley takes the name of Oliver Quick, a student who has recently arrived at Oxford and is having a hard time fitting in. He manages to attract the attention of Felix Catton, a charismatic young man, unexpectedly sweet and loved by everyone. Felix invites Oliver to spend the summer at Saltburn, the home of the Catton family. Oliver finds himself surrounded by characters rather than people, human beings who seem to have lost all contact with reality. Little by little Oliver, who is introduced to us as a shy boy from a small town, awkward, who has little to do with anyone surrounds him, not only by personality but also by social class and economic condition, presents new and particular aspects of his personality that gradually make us understand what his real intentions are and the truth that lies behind his actions and attitudes. As mentioned initially, this is nothing new. A story that has already been told but which finds inspiration to have a lot of resonance, for some scenes that are causing so much discussion, which honestly caused me more annoyance than anything else. The strong points are there, the main one is definitely Read all

Saltburn is a film with a social theme that tries to place itself between Parasite and The Servant (Losery) where Fennel stages an excellent aesthetic with excellent cuts of light and composition of the paintings and where at the same time it exceeds a bit of excessive pomposity in certain situations and does not manage the final plot twist in the best possible way. The direction seeks a lot of reflection, the protagonist Olivier is reflected several times between the table, the water and indeed the mirror, this is because he is a different character from how he appears in the bourgeois family and hides his plan. Always among the reflections it is impossible not to mention the reflection of the landscape on the water. Fennel stages a film of contrasts and reversals "I loved him and I hated him" as Oliver will say. The homoerotic tension between Olivier and Felix is highly derivative of The Servant and in fact from a first glance, all of Olivier's actions, trying to befriend the entire family, seem to be aimed at Felix's attentions. During these attempts the film shows how the family members are spoiled and also easily "duped" except for Farleigh, in fact here the narrative does not focus on depth but shows a certain caricatural side of the Catton family. In these moments Fennel highly aestheticizes some scenes such as Olivier's gaze, his moving towards the bathroom on a red background and see Felix masturbating and the subsequent scene in the tub and licking the water. The gothic moments between Olivier and Felix's sister, complete with vampire references are certainly beautiful to see. It is interesting that the first to have Farleigh, in fact adopted and not born into the Catton family, has doubts about Olivier. The friction and clashes between the two will be quite central in the film as they both want to stay in Saltburn. So the concept of Parasite comes out first in the character of Pamela, Read all
