Review of  Balkan Castevet Balkan Castevet
Todd Haynes directs a film about the crumbling of bourgeois life with a psychological horror form. The story centers on the protagonist Carol, Julian Moore, where through Haynes' direction she is always framed distant from every situation, both in family relationships and in her hobbies and among the friends. The direction always gives a lot of space to the environment but also through how Carol is positioned in the frame ensures that the outcome is that of a constant discomfort for the protagonist, never full of herself and always dominated by the scenery. The photography and staging are excellent, the contrasts between the pastel colors of Carol's bourgeois house with what she is feeling are beautiful; many paintings are reminiscent of Douglas Sirk also for the chromatic choices. The film also uses darker tones, here a shot that mixes dark green with black is beautiful to enclose Carol's crisis in the "structure" she will find herself in for try to "get well". The protagonist is a housewife, or rather, "homeworker" as she prefers to be called, well-off but where immediately, both through the shots and the sneeze, to symbolize the beginning of the disease, the direction makes it clear that something it doesn't work. The whole story is interesting and well structured because it proceeds taking the right time and unlike other films, such as the most recent Swallow which has several aspects in common with Safe, the protagonist Carol is not isolated, she potentially has both a family, a group of friends, her hobbies but through the direction even when she is in the presence of other people she is placed as if she were uncomfortable and yes even isolated. The interest in furniture, the gym, hair styling, in short, all of Carol's activities will never be relaxing but progressively everything she comes into contact with will seem to cause her damage both Read all
