Can an experimental film be made in 1948? Yes! Hitchcock did it with “Knot in the Throat”. 80 minutes of uninterrupted sequence shot (in reality there are some editing connections but they are almost invisible to the viewer's eye). Shot indoors, the film immediately offers us the perspective of the killers and their motive: the creation of a perfect crime. Two young friends kill a third boy and hide his body inside a chest. This is what they tell us in the very first lines of the film. In the evening a party is planned after which the two boys will leave for a holiday. The guests are about to arrive and no one must suspect that a crime has just taken place in that apartment. The murder soon begins to appear as a sort of macabre homage paid by the killers to their mentor. Throughout the film we breathe the homoerotic tension between the two characters even though nothing tells it clearly. The dialogues are perfect. Nothing is left to chance. Everything is studied to the millimetre. Every performer gives their best. James Stewart stands tall above all. A film that is a film school from every perspective you look at it. Wonderful film by the master Hitchcock which uses a superb maxi-sequence shot to fuel suspense, never an end in itself, where a film of strong criticism of Nazism directed in a sublime way is staged between homoerotic tension, atmosphere, psychology and intensity. The film immediately starts off great with the exterior shot from above giving a wide view of the street, houses and buildings; the subsequent camera movement goes on the shutter and therefore the murder will be shown.Hitchcock plays on the concept of sight, the murder takes place in full sunlight, therefore the first shot suggests precisely the sight, the broad view that it has the spectator; on the contrary the closed shutter and the lights off show the darkness, the character of Philip, one of the two accomplices in the murder together with his partner Brandon, will also during the film place a lot of emphasis on the concept of the light off, off and on the contrary Brandon it will open the locks, therefore opening the view and the view. Still in full Hays code the gay relationship of the "couple" could not be clear and explicit but the homoerotic tension is very present, one notices the fascination that Philip has for Brandon, for his charisma and there are dialogues that allude to double meanings. Brandon especially, with Philip's complicity, want to commit the perfect crime, effectively "giving birth" to their own creature, a key to understanding that can be done is that this crime is for the couple their son, two men who give birth to a creature. In the film there are subtle references to Frankenstein especially on the concepts of morality, of replacing God, Frankenstein himself outlines two men, the doctor and his assistant, who obtain a their creation, therefore a queer declination of the story.
