This film is often misinterpreted as a simple remake of Hitchcock's original masterpiece (hence the avalanche of negative reviews that this film has collected and continues to collect). But Van Sant's is not a remake of Psycho: it is, first and foremost, an experiment, a reflection on the role of the artist. In the same way as what Von Trier did in The Big Boss, albeit with different means, Van Sant cancels himself: the artist deprives himself of his own artisticity. But if the Danish director had pursued this objective through technology, Automavision, Van Sant does so by tracing Hitchcock's work, as with transparent paper a pre-existing drawing is traced. This is where the beauty of the film lies: of the film as an experiment, not as a mere narrative product with moving images. Read all

A young female embezzler arrives at the Bates Motel, which has terrible secrets of its own. Although this version is in color, features a different cast, and is set in 1998, it is closer to a shot-for-shot remake than most remakes, Gus Van Sant often copying Hitchcock's camera movements and editing, and Joseph Stefano's script is mostly carried over. Bernard Herrmann's musical score is reused as well, though with a new arrangement by Danny Elfman and recorded in stereo.
