Carlos Reygadas, in cinematographic narration, like Claude Monet, in painting. What do these two artists, so distant chronologically, have to do with it? Both, in different ways but with the same, in my opinion, modus operandi, seek not the real but what lies behind the real: the impression. The Mexican director, in fact, with this jewel, Post Tenebras Lux, applies to narration what the French painter had theorized in 1872 with Impression, Soleil Levant and subsequently developed: in the famous painting, in fact, as in his subsequent ones, he eliminates the outlines of his figures, eschews realism, thus producing patches of colors that "summarize" reality, modeling its essence, that is, what lies behind the façade of materiality ("the essential is invisible to the eyes", said Saint-Exupéry in The Little Prince, a motto which seems to have been taken almost faithfully from Monet).Similarly, Reygadas eliminates the contours, not only from the image, thanks to the frequent use of special lenses, but above all from the narrative. The show we witness is devoid of well-defined features, the film is a succession of heterogeneous patches of color which do not aim, just like Monet's art, at realism, narrative in the case of cinema: Post Tenebras Lux is a continuous flow of narrative-visual suggestions that translate into impressions.
