The subject of Opponent is really interesting and contemporary. Telling the story of the odyssey of refugees in rich European countries who are tossed from one corner to another awaiting a sentence that allows them to live peacefully is an important subject. Yet the final result creaks. The screenplay accumulates too many problems together and at times Opponent seems to proceed more by accumulation than by narrative continuity. Family secrets are yet another problem for those seeking freedom and the mystery that the screenplay tries to build is too weak (what does the wife know?). Alami winks at sensuality. Which becomes a key element of the film, but this too is too schematic to provide any shock. Approaches, glances and rejections alternate as if written by an algorithm. Maadi remains an excellent protagonist, already unforgettable in A Separation by Farhadi, who despite a questionable physicality strikes for his intensity. Ben represents a man at the mercy of his instincts and society. It's a shame, a film that has an excellent starting point but gets lost in too much schematism. The direction fails to find an original representation and everything floats to the conclusion. Read all

plot

In the aftermath of a devastating rumor, Iman and his family have been forced to flee Iran. As refugees, they end up in a run-down hotel in northern Sweden. Despite feeling powerless, Iman tries to maintain his role as the family patriarch. To increase their chances of asylum, he breaks a promise to his wife and joins the local wrestling club. As the rumours start to resurface, Iman’s fear and desperation begin to take a hold.
