Around Gabriele Mainetti, creator of that original gem that was They Called Me Jeeg Robot, a small school of Roman directors was born who are looking for a new way to tell the reality of the suburbs with a touch of fantasy. Shark Teeth falls into this vein and marks Davide Gentile's debut behind the camera on a screenplay that won the Solinas award almost a decade ago. There's no point in hiding it, it's not a perfect film, immature in both the writing and the direction... yet it works. Shark's Teeth has a rare visual appeal for our cinema, an ability to create an uncommon atmosphere and, last but not least, the courage to take a risk on a genre that is truly little explored in Italy. On an acting level, Virginia Raffaele's debut in the dramatic world is interesting, despite a direction that continually portrays her as one of the courageous mothers of important Italian films of the past. The acting of the protagonists is less punctual, rightly immature, but unfortunately not always directed very well. However, it is an excellent experiment that perhaps would have deserved a better time in theaters. Excellent for overcoming some reservations towards Italian cinema and for bringing young audiences into the cinema. Let's hope so. Read all
