The American Jeff Nichols rose to prominence in 2011 with “Take Shelter”, a film which, however interesting and non-trivial it may have been, in my opinion was decidedly overrated by critics and the public. In 2016, however, Nichols wrote the screenplay and directed this “Midnight Special”, a work of a much different quality (paradoxically the reaction of the public and critics was more lukewarm than “Take Shelter”) which certainly leaves one fully satisfied. With the presence of Michael Shannon (an actor used several times by Nichols in his films) who plays Roy, Alton's father, the better known Joel Edgerton, the very young Jaeden Martell in the part of Alton Meyer, the boy protagonist and with Kirsten Dunst in the role of Alton's mother and with the participation of Adam Driver, the film tells of the adventures of Roy and his friend Lucas (Edgerton) who together with little Alton flee from county to county to prevent the boy from falling into the hands of the American government. What is so important about Alton Meyer? He is certainly a special child with superhuman powers and for this reason the FBI is looking for him to use him as a weapon... However, Alton is not the classic superhero, quite the opposite, in reality he appears to be a child knowledge of mysterious and fascinating details for all of humanity... A well-made film from a technical point of view, with practically perfect rhythm management, which must be (re)discovered without prejudice. To see and review. Read all
