There are works so small and so distant that they arrive on our big screens so rarely that, even though they are not absolutely masterpieces, they manage to conquer us. Talking about a little-known world and cultures is a great attraction, and if done with a nod to Western culture, it works even more. In itself, Lunana's plot is simple, obvious and linear. The story of the awareness of an alternative world, of a different way of life that accompanies the protagonist is probably the most predictable one can imagine and yet we remain enchanted for two hours by a world we don't know. Of course, Lunana is not a documentary about Bhutan and its small village that can only be reached on foot after 7 days of walking, but it involves us with the simplicity of a linear story made up of encounters and acquaintances. Everything is amplified by the simplicity and naturalness of the little girl co-protagonist of the film. For once she is not a tear catcher, but determined, stubborn and happy with her world in a mix of character and reality from which it is difficult to extricate herself.
