Review of  Diego Cineriflessi Diego Cineriflessi
We have arrived at chapter two, or the final one, of this diptych by Sorrentino on Berlusconi. The perplexity that the first chapter had raised about its true meaning remains. The second part is less lyrical, more real and starts with two decidedly intriguing scenes. The first represents Silvio in conversation with one of his close collaborators, again played by Servillo, in a sort of mirror game in which they mold themselves to him. As ingenious as it is real (how can we forget the real advertisement of a famous bank of the group in which does his administrator seem like a photocopy of Berlusconi?). The second is the phone call to a stranger in which he tries to confirm his skills as a salesman/barker in a masterly telephone dialogue written at the tip of the pen. Then Veronica and the Olgettines appear and the film loses its bite. It loses power over the audience as its protagonist begins to lose his security. Not all the girls praise him, Cupa betrays him, the earthquake in L'Aquila damages his relationship with the electorate. The screenplay struggles to find closure and the symbolism reappears... a Christ is saved from the rubble in L'Aquila. Is this enough closure? Do too many characters get lost along the way? Only He deserves an ending and they don't because they only shine with reflected light? A discontinuous film, with more irony than chapter 1, but not completely convincing. Probably closer to Youth than to Il divo. Definitely not the best Sorrentino. Read all

plot

"Loro", in two parts, is a period movie that chronicles, as a fiction story, events likely happened in Italy (or even made up) between 2006 and 2010. "Loro" wants to suggest in portraits and glimps, through a composite constellation of characters, a moment in history, now definitively ended, which can be described in a very summary picture of the events as amoral, decadent but extraordinarily alive. Additionally, "Loro" wishes to tell the story of some Italians, fresh and ancient people at the same time: souls from a modern imaginary Purgatory who, moved by heterogeneous intents like ambition, admiration, affection, curiosity, personal interests, establish to try and orbit around the walking Paradise that is the man named Silvio Berlusconi.
