“The problem is not the fall but the landing”. 25 years have passed since Hate, the film that revealed Mathieu Kassovitz, but nothing seems to have changed in the Parisian suburbs. Les Misérables, Ladj Ly's directorial debut, narrates two days in the life of three policemen who operate in Montfermeil, one of the locations in Victor Hugo's novel. For Brigadier Ruiz (Damien Bonnard) it is the first day, his Training day, alongside veterans Chris (Alexis Manenti) and Djibril Zonga ( Gwada) with their circus from which a lion cub was stolen. There is the "mayor" of the city, who is actually a sort of neighborhood boss, in charge of maintaining order with bribes. There is Salah , a redeemed former criminal who now tries to preach peace and to whom one turns in case of need. There are other criminals colluding with the police. And then there are them, the children, Issa (Issa Perica) and his friends, the victims of this system. In the neighbourhood, apart from the degradation, the rubbish and a probable criminal future already written, there is nothing, except Islam, which in fact is the only institution present. As per tradition the police are arrogant and violent, especially Chris who behaves like a sheriff and who is opposed by Ruiz's attempt to remain human. plot

Inspired by the 2005 riots in Paris, Stéphane, a recent transplant to the impoverished suburb of Montfermeil, joins the local anti-crime squad. Working alongside his unscrupulous colleagues Chris and Gwada, Stéphane struggles to maintain order amidst the mounting tensions between local gangs. When an arrest turns unexpectedly violent, the three officers must reckon with the aftermath and keep the neighborhood from spiraling out of control.
