Joker - Foliè a Deux talks about the theme of the double, the contrast, or presumed such, between Arthur Fleck and Joker and the legacy of the latter on a social level, therefore on the population and on the consequences of such acts and what it entails. This makes us think of the current socio-political situation in the States, the character of the Joker becomes an idol for a segment of the population, hence the parallelism between the assault on Capitol Hill and the one on the court that takes place in the film. Jokers like Trump have made an impression on extreme groups of citizens who react with acts of delinquency. Therefore the film questions the fact that Arthur is a victim of the Joker and of the extremism of the crowd he created, who wants the Joker, wants that character. To show the theme of the double, Phillips shows many shots of Arthur from monitors, there are many TVs that show Arthur's interviews as well as the court monitors and this also serves to give the concept of the media's conveyance, what they show, what reaches the population. Above all, the sequence of Paddy Mayers' interview with Arthur is emblematic with the alternation of close-ups between Arthur in the courthouse and between the monitors/TV. Lady Gaga's character, Lee, is the one who most of all instigates Arthur to show himself as Joker and to act like one, the scenes of musicals, when the love story between the two starts, are more colorful and as a basic idea also "rhythmic", even if Phillips is not very comfortable in creating that sense of wild and crazy moments. The whole film, however, is always pervaded by a dramatic and melancholy note that reflects Arthur's state and consequently also the scenes from musicals will become progressively more "sad". 138 minutes of slaps in the face to the expectations of viewers, whatever category they belong to, especially those who could see Joker as a revenge, albeit in a criminal way, of the loser, or worse as a sort of dark version of the V of V for Vendetta , an anarchic force fighting against the system. In the end, Joker is still him, Arthur Fleck: a loser, and his story is not a superomistic apotheosis, even in the worst sense of the term, but a self-destructive parable: the only difference between the Arthur Fleck before and after Joker is that the loser at the mercy of the system has become a loser at the mercy of the system, of his own madness, of his own fame and of his own admirers (whether fame hunters or potential terrorists) and their expectations. A monster that breeds monsters, who in turn sabotage his every chance at redemption, whether by tickling his worst instincts - the ones that made him lose touch with reality - or by physically interfering with his punishment. He plays with the expectations of the spectator, the director, taking a pickaxe at all the narrative schemes he uses in the film, starting from the musical (an alienating way of showing at the same time the thoughts of the protagonists and their detachment from the real world) to the narrative motifs typical of trial drama. By entrusting everything on the shoulders of Joaquim Phoenix, who, as we know, are strong enough to withstand anything, Phillips allows himself a staid and (perhaps a little too much?) free direction which conveys the tone of the film well and allows the spectator to never get distracted from the flow of the story. Is it inferior to the first? But of course, (almost) every sequel is, what news. But it is an excellent sequel, which has the rare merit of if not adding something to the original, then at least providing better context

I really hoped to love Joker: Folie à Deux as much as the first film, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. 👎👎 The sequel loses the original's dark storytelling charm, drowning it in unnecessary musical numbers. Instead of a gripping psychological thriller, it feels more like a quirky Broadway show.😂😂😂 Joaquin Phoenix is fantastic, as always, but even his incredible talent can't lift a film that seems bogged down by a confusing direction.
