First of all: Joker is a comic book only on paper, for the sole reason that it borrows the name of a villain from the superhero universe. But Arthur Fleck, aka Joker, could also have been called Aldo Saltalaquaglia, aka Cicciopasticcio: the film would have remained the same. The labels, the names are those borrowed from Batman but there is very little of the cinecomic aesthetic, to say nothing. I wouldn't have bet a cent on Todd Phillips, who I appreciate as a director of bizarre comedies ("I'm leaving with the madman" above all) but in whose technical and aesthetic quality I have never placed great trust or esteem: I have always preferred his characters to his aesthetics. Among other things, I was struck by hearing the name of Ethan Chase echoed in the film, a character of ultimate importance, who shares a name with Zach Galifianakis' character, whose stage name is Ethan Tremblay, in Childbirth. I was rather of course, therefore, I would have appreciated the construction of the protagonists, of Joker above all obviously, and so it was: despite his two-dimensionality, Arthur Fleck is three-dimensional, paradoxical as it may seem.
