Jackie. A reflection on the creation of myth through images for a theoretical and intellectual film that risks being too cold. Alternative title which I like but it's a play on words: A staging of a staging. Many were waiting for Pablo Larraín, both because Jackie is his first American film and many wondered if he would give in to the pressure of Hollywood, and because objectively it is difficult to say something new about President Kennedy. However, the Chilean director chose a side street, approaching Kennedy from the point of view of his widow, Jackie, played by a Natalie Portman in a state of grace (we are referring to the original version). The final result is an extremely intellectual and complex film. Larraín focuses on the days following Kennedy's assassination, through the artifice of an interview given by Jackie to a journalist (played by Billy Crudup). The whole story is therefore filtered through the eyes of a wife, a mother but above all a first lady grappling with doubts and uncertainties that are confessed only to a priest (John Hurt). Jackie is moved by a single purpose, to elevate her husband's presidency to an epic dimension so as not to let it end up in oblivion and in some way give life to that myth of Camelot so longed for by the couple. The instrument will be the funeral of the deceased, which will follow that of Lincoln and which will have to impose itself in the eyes of the Americans, fixing Kennedy's name forever in their memory. Everything must be functional for this purpose and all the the rest therefore takes second place; the frictions with Bob Kennedy (Peter Sarsgaard) as well as the state problems or the impatience of Lyndon Johnson. But above all, what is bent for this purpose is the truth itself, starting from the truth about Jackie's marriage itself, Read all
