You can't eat with culture, one of our ministers said some time ago. It's probably the same thing that Nemo (Willem Defoe), the protagonist of Inside by Vasilis Katsoupis, must have thought. Ours is a thief specialized in theft of works of art who, during a heist, becomes a prisoner of the very luxurious and hyper-technological apartment of a rich collector .Works of art abound (at the end of the film there is also the complete list), while food is scarce and not even a drop of water comes out of the taps. To make matters worse, the automatic air conditioning system provides he goes crazy, oscillating between tropical heat and glacial cold. Finally, not even the television works, so Nemo finds himself completely isolated from the rest of the world, with his only company being the closed-circuit filming system with which he spies on what is happening in the rest of the building. In short, ours is a new Robinson, an island as he will say in one of the few memories/delusions present in the film. Except that, being in the modern era, a bit like what happened in Cast Away by Robert Zemeckis, ours is more than worried of survival, which he seems to do in his spare time, he spends his time watching closed-circuit footage, inventing stories starting from those images. Perhaps Katsoupis' film is intended to be a reflection on this, on how human beings are now become addicted to images to the point of watching a television rather than thinking about how to escape from an apartment that risks turning into a tomb. Perhaps instead the theme is art and its function, on the one hand a lifeline for Nemo, who, like our ancestors, will end up painting the walls of the apartment because it is our primary instinct; on the other hand, let's face it, it's a useless frill that when you're hungry, fake oranges don't help you much.
