John Carpenter, a Master (now seventy-five years old), an exemplary career, an absolute point of reference for all directors who operate in the Horror field at all levels. Talking about his career would mean writing several articles but this is not the objective of a review and therefore I will focus solely on the film in question. At the time of the film (1994), Carpenter was coming off the flop of "The Adventures of the Invisible Man" which represented, concretely, the second misstep of his career (the first occurred in 1984 with "Starman") after having strung together a series of decidedly high-level films, from “Big Trouble in Chinatown” to “The Master of Evil” to “They Live”. Two years after "The Invisible Man", Carpenter decides to return to his origins and directs a story created by Michael De Luca, already author of the screenplay of "Nightmare 6 - The End", which stands out for its brilliance and originality of the narrative. The main protagonist of the film is Sam Neill who, the year before, had had a leading role in Spielberg's "Jurassic Park" and who here shows off an Oscar-worthy performance, convincing everyone, audiences and critics, of his potential. The story seems to have a Kinghian soul even if Carpenter's hand is clearly visible and present: monsters, malformations, time loops and an extraordinary ability to blend reality and meta-reality within a book that describes a film that describes a book… Yes, it seems complicated but this is the story of “In the Maw of Madness” translated into a questionable “The Seed of Madness”, nothing more, nothing less. Carpenter's direction, the locations of the various scenes, the rhythm, the sparse jumpscares, the powerful heavy-metal tinged OST, everything is masterfully ordered and constructed to perfection and Neill's performance is the icing on the cake of a movie that Read all
