Rial (Wunmi Mosaku) and Bol (Sope Dirisu) are two Sudanese refugees who have arrived in Great Britain and who are finally assigned a home so that they can integrate and demonstrate their "good will" while awaiting recognition of their refugee status. . But within those walls there is something that haunts them. His House, Remi Weekes' feature film debut, is a layered horror film with multiple readings. The first question concerns what the creature that haunts them really wants. Apparently being has different meanings for the two protagonists. For Rial it seems inextricably linked to his maternal role, while for Bol it appears rather as the representation of his feelings of guilt. But there is more; what exactly do the various apparitions reproach the couple for? Depending on the moment, their faults appear different. Thus their original sin could be that of having abandoned their homeland, or home, to seek a better existence elsewhere in a new home. It will only be the unfolding of events and the narrative turning point of the film that sheds light on the price paid by the two to reach salvation, on what they have accomplished, in a certain sense the crime of which they are guilty. So , a bit like what happened in Jennifer Kent's Babadook, ghosts are in reality nothing more than the projection of our unconscious, of our fears and our sins and the only solution to live peacefully is, somehow, to come to terms with them, defeat them, change their essence and learn to live with them. This, however, is only one of the themes put on the table by the director. On the other hand there is the possibility of a more exquisitely political reading.
