Gianni Amelio has a good point in saying that his Hammamet does not want to be a political film but rather about the end of a single man. It is not enough to change the names, as in the case of Stefania Craxi who becomes Anita (Livia Rossi), or not to do them at all as for his son Bobo (Alberto Paradossi with an extraordinary resemblance). It is not even enough to choose a lover (Claudia Gerini) as the personification of all the women who revolved around the leader, or to rely on collective memory hoping that the public will recognize in Giuseppe Cederna the then administrative secretary of the PSI Vincenzo Balzamo.And it is also useless to never mention the name and surname of the stone guest when you then rely on a Pierfrancesco Favino who, literally, embodies and becomes Craxi in a thrilling performance while managing at the same time ( and this is where his greatness lies) in revealing himself as a man and an actor under the mask. There is little that can be done, Hammamet may not be a political film but it is certainly a militant film. It remains to be understood what Amelio is talking about and who he is addressing It seems to us that from this point of view the whole meaning of the operation lies in the metaphor of the broken window. The film in fact opens with a child (we will discover that it is Craxi as a child) who throws stones at the windows and closes again with a broken glass.
