Set between the end and the imminent post-war Godzilla represented the horrors of this. A war that persists, the catastrophes it entails are alive among people. Many beautiful images of destroyed Tokyo and its progressive reconstruction, moving forward, trying to start again but the protagonist Koichi is unable to do so because he lives on ghosts and torments , he did not fulfill his """"duty"""" as a kamikaze, he fled, just as he hesitates and trembles in the face of Godzilla's first appearance. The human sector is one of the strong points of the film, especially because in of this type is often instead the weak point, the war has never ended for Koichi so he is unable to fully enjoy the opportunity of a new life with Noriko and little Akiku. These dynamics could perhaps have been more in-depth, the torment Koichi's interior is often better told, however nothing serious especially for a film of this type. There is a lot of Spielberg in Yamazaki's direction, Godzilla's first appearance is reminiscent of Jurassic Park, subjectively I would have liked more construction in the appearance of Big G but the effect is to show it directly; in the end the references to Jaws are evident. Godzilla's destruction of Tokyo works very well with well-constructed dynamics and shots, the one of the train is very good as is the preparation and launch of the kaiju's atomic ray with the subsequent effects. For the budget available, the work is very good, the rendering of Godzilla is valid, yes sometimes the cgi is not at its best, especially in the military vehicles but nothing so negatively impactful also considering the budget available.
