Tim Burton's Dumbo is a film divided in half. In the first part, apparently, the director simply clocks in. We are in 1919 America and Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) has just returned from the war with one arm missing he can hug his children again; Milly and Joe (Nico Parker and Finley Hobbins) have lost their mother. The circus in which he works, however, is not in good shape and the owner Max Medici (Danny DeVito) has just purchased a pregnant elephant in an attempt to revive its fortunes .Burton brings home the work for which he was paid by creating, essentially, a remake of the original animated film from which he takes up the most iconic moments. Thus we see little Dumbo comforted by his mother's trunk, the destruction of the circus by of the latter and even the famous dance of the pink elephants. Other elements of the original feature film are scattered here and there like quotes, from the stork carrying the newborn, to the little mouse who in the original helped the little one to fly up to the inevitable magic feather necessary to explain the ears. Burton creates a perfect entertainment product for families, full of cinematographic quotes ranging from classic musicals to references to Fellini. In the midst of all this we find the themes that have always run through his cinema. The community of marginalized freaks who prove to be much more united and human than the so-called normal ones or the inevitable orphan child (in this case two). The fact is that Dumbo finally flies and at that point, rightly, the spectator wonders how the story will continue given that , in fact, the original ended here. So the impresario Vandevere (Michael Keaton) appears on the scene together with the trapeze artist Colette (Eva Green), who proposes a partnership to Medici, reveals the circus and takes everyone to his park entertainment; Dreamland.
