Matteo Garrone has stated several times that Dogman is only inspired by the Canaro story and that it is not a story of revenge but of resentment. We see no reason to doubt these statements. However, the viewer who goes to see the film knows that Marcello (played by Marcello Pesce, winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes for best actor), will patiently endure the oppression of Simone (a great Edoardo Pesce) until he can no longer stand it. In short, one goes to the cinema expecting a crescendo of tension that leads to final explosion. Garrone, on the other hand, has something completely different in mind and here lies the fundamental problem of Dogman and perhaps it would have been better, instead of taking inspiration from a news story, to invent an original story. In the past the director has amply demonstrated of being able to apply his authorial gaze to genre cinema, giving it new life, just think of titles such as The Embalmer (2002), First Love (2004), Tomorrow (2008) or The Tale of Tales (2015) Precisely from the latter, in our opinion, we must start to understand the step backwards that, in our opinion, Dogman represents. The story of stories was in fact a generous attempt to find a European and Italian way to fantasy, starting from our cultural background without giving up the ambition of dealing with major productions (especially American ones) and their imagery. The results, unfortunately, were terrible and despite an investment of over 14 million dollars the proceeds did not reach 3 million euros. plot
