Even from the age of four, children begin their working 'career', helping to supervise the collected material, selecting and cleaning. At the beginning they collect the 'easiest' materials, paper and plastic; sometimes they find a toy in the trash. At 14 they know how to do 'everything' that a 'basurero' worker needs to be able to do. 92% of the landfill's people live in dilapidated houses; at the foot of the 'Chureca' a small settlement of sheet metal and wooden shacks was born in which, in addition to families, prostitutes and huelepega, users of glue and other drugs live. At 'Chureca', which covers 42 hectares, dozens of trucks unload nine hundred tons of waste every day. The collectors await them and quickly 'attack' the freshly unloaded pile with makeshift tools. The vehicles raise clouds of blinding dust. Fuel is periodically scattered with airplanes and fires are set; other highly toxic smoke hits the people of the landfill. In summer the temperatures exceed forty degrees. In winter, under torrential rains, the landfill is a swamp and sinks into the mud. The risks are different; from accidents caused by truck drivers to injuries from sharp objects. The illnesses are aggravated by the lack of hygiene: coughs, malarial fevers, hemorrhagic dengue, lice, skin infections, mercury blood poisoning. plot

Nicaragua, today. Eleven-year-old María lives with her mother Lilibeth on the edge of an immense rubbish dump. Their future depends on selling a litter of purebred puppies to a local gang member. When the deal falls through, Lilibeth has to move to the outskirts of the city and leave María to work at a recycling factory. The days go by with no sign of her mother's return. María feels abandoned, confused and angry. One night she meets Tadeo, a kind and romantic boy determined to help her find her mother.
