Enigmatic deadly trap, it does not reveal the origin of evil of

La Prof Dell' Horror

Vincenzo Natali, author and director of The Cube, his debut work, shows a marked predisposition for innovative stories (in 2009 he will be at the helm of another very, very particular film: Splice). The subject in question immediately shows that he is not joking, and, despite the low budget, he has a lot to tell. Imagine finding yourself locked up with five other strangers in an unknown location. You open your eyes, and boom, you are catapulted elsewhere, away from your home and your loved ones, trapped in a narrow cubic room with six doors (one on each side of the room), which opens onto as many similar rooms. There is no logic, nothing that makes sense, or a valid answer to that fatal unknown, any question at that point seems almost trivial. In a similar circumstance, as I see it, the first objective is not to go crazy, and the second, find a way to escape. The cube certainly shocks the viewer with a naked and raw beginning, without too many preambles and above all, explanations. Not knowing why strangers have been imprisoned in a devious, incomprehensible structure generates anxiety and uneasiness. There are no noble motivations as in Saw, no tests to overcome for a redemption not desired but imposed, no motive, no motivation, much less any clarification. The architect Worth, Dr. Holloway, the policeman Quentin, the mathematics student Leaven and the thief expert in escapes Rennes are the chosen ones for this unlikely experiment. Maybe someone is spying on them, who knows, the fact is that none of them know each other, or have the faintest idea why they are there.
