Talking about the power intrigues between undemocratic heads of state and the religious leadership of a country has always been very complex. In Italy I already try Dante with The Divine Comedy and he wasn't a particularly well-regarded person in his Florence. Saleh was also banished from Egypt after having given the world Murder in Cairo, a previous work which already told the story of the power games of the nation of pyramids. This time he further raises the bar by also including the religious school and the world of the Imams in the political intrigues of his country. According to Saleh, politics significantly interferes with religious decisions. I'll tell you all this with a thriller that unfortunately he knows he's already seen. This is precisely the film's biggest flaw. Despite a very original setting for us Westerners, the clichés of the genre are all present and this does not help. We have the innocent and idealistic young man, the unscrupulous police chief, the subordinate with a heart, the wise old man ready to sacrifice... In fact it's a bit too much and the surprise effect never arrives. Awarded at Cannes for the screenplay , despite being the weakest point of the film, The Cairo Conspiracy has solid direction and good performances, but struggles to fully captivate due to its predictability. It's a shame because the visual strength is undeniable... Saleh is still a director to keep an eye on. Read all

A fisherman's son is offered the ultimate privilege to study at the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, the epicenter of power of Sunni Islam. Shortly after his arrival, the university’s highest ranking religious leader, the Grand Imam, dies and the young student becomes a pawn in a ruthless power struggle between Egypt's religious and political elite.
