Review of  Emiliano Baglio Emiliano Baglio
Burning – Love burns. A visual poem in which form is substance. Jong-su (Yoo Ah-in) meets his schoolmate Hae-mi (Jeon Jong-seo) after many years. The two have a relationship interrupted by the girl's departure for Africa. When Hae-mi returns, Ben (Steven Yeun) is with her. Although Jong-su is now effectively the third wheel, the three begin to date until Hae-mi mysteriously disappears. Jong-su is an aspiring writer. Burning is based on a story by Haruki Murakami but in the film you can feel both the influence of William Faulkner, cited several times by Jong-su as a source of inspiration, and of Francis Scott Fitzgerald and in particular of The Great Gatsby which is the nickname that Jong-su gives to Ben. Writing is therefore fundamental in Lee Chang-dong's latest work, both in terms of theme and in terms of the screenplay. In fact, at the center of the work we find the creative process, the making itself of the film, as a possible interpretative key to an elusive reality. As Jong-su himself confesses, for him "the world is an enigma". Perhaps, then, telling stories can become a way to give shape to this mystery. However, we must be able to understand how true these stories are; as in the case of Hae-mi when she recalls her fall into a well as a child, an event that no one seems to remember. Perhaps the girl is inventing or perhaps she is sending a request for help disguised as a metaphor, the very metaphor whose meaning she asks to her two friends/lovers. Perhaps Burning already has within itself all the answers to the questions that apparently remain unsolved. You just need to be able to grasp the invisible, as in the case of Hae-mi's cat that never shows up yet it is there, at least judging by the traces of poop left in the sand. As in the pantomime staged by the girl, one must forget Read all
